Woodbridge Golf Club, located in Wylie, Texas, has been selected by the PGA Tour to host a 2008 Q-School pre-qualification tournament. From September 23-26, PGA tour hopefuls will gather in Wylie looking to take their first step toward earning a PGA Tour card for 2009.
Previously selected as the home of the Northern Texas Section of the PGA of America, this year's tournament marks the latest PGA honor for the Lee Singletary designed course.
Opened in 1999 to rave reviews from the Dallas Morning News and Golf Digest, Woodbridge Golf Club remains one of the best public courses in the Metroplex. Named one of the ten best new courses in Texas by the Dallas Morning News the year it opened, Woodbridge was ranked #15 in the state by the newspaper in it's 2007 rankings of mid-priced courses. Dubbed "a course that Ben Hogan would love," by Ron Whitten, architecture editor of Golf Digest, in 2001, Woodbridge was featured in the 2008 edition of Golf Digest's Places to Play with a Four Star Rating.
Big D : Good public golf pops up all over Dallas-Fort Worth
Golf Digest, July, 2001 by Ron Whitten
"The opposite extreme can be found to the south, at Woodbridge Golf Club in Wylie, another in the $40-$60 range. I played Woodbridge with its designer, Lee Singletary, a local architect struggling to find steady work. This is his best work to date, one that bucks the trend of trying to be all things to all golfers. Give hackers wide fairways? Not at Woodbridge. Most holes are tight and treelined, with deep brush beyond. Bounce it onto every green? Not here. Seven greens have creeks fronting them, and five others have water guarding a portion. Dumb down the greens to speed up play? No, the greens were heavily contoured."
PLACES TO PLAY - Golf Digest, 2008
You "must play from the proper set of tees" at this "very difficult but fair" course with "excellent greens" and a staff that "treats everyone great."
Darrell Crall, Executive Director of The Northern Texas Section of the PGA of America, described Woodbridge Golf Club as:
“An outstanding test of golf as designed by PGA Member Lee Singletary. Woodbridge is destined to become one of the best courses in the Dallas / Ft. Worth Metroplex and the entire State of Texas. Outstanding length and shot values from the championship tees challenges the best players while the shorter tees provides a fun and interesting outing for even the beginner. The greens are truly challenging but all the while fair and the bunkering and subtle use of the water features reminds one of the great traditional parkland courses of the northeastern U.S. The Northern Texas PGA is proud to call Woodbridge home.”
Reasonably priced at $59.00 per round, Woodbridge's championship 18 hole layout measures over 7,100 yards from the back tees and features one of the state's only 600 yard holes. Manicured Tif-Eagle Bermuda Greens and Tifway 419 Bermuda Grass tees and fairways line the course. Practice facility are perhaps the most complete in the area with 2 huge practice tees, a 12,000 square foot putting green, plus a 9,000 square foot chipping green. The all grass practice range promises plenty of good grass with the designated hitting area being changed frequently and the practice facilities given the same careful attention as the championship course.
